The epidemic of the new coronavirus 2019-nCoV appeared in China worries a majority of French people, according to a survey Odoxa / Dentsu Consulting carried out for Le Figaro.
Is it the accumulation of bad news from China, or the presence of some 2019-nCoV coronavirus patients on the territory, which undermines the confidence of the French? According to a survey * Odoxa carried out with Dentsu Consulting for Le Figaro and France Info, “the coronavirus worries the French a lot” , with 52% of the respondents declaring themselves completely worried (15%) or rather worried (37%) , for themselves or their family. Only 14% of respondents say they are “not at all worried”.
“This virus is causing more concern than influenza A and avian flu over their time” (in 2009 and 2006 respectively), explains Odoxa. Only the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014 had caused more concern (55% of French people).
For some, this concern is already expressed by concrete actions. One in six French people (17%) say they have already changed their own behavior in the face of the epidemic, mainly by visiting certain public places less than before, places where the risk of contamination would be the highest if the epidemic spreads in France.
Despite this emerging concern, it is not yet psychosis, and the majority of French people believe that the government is taking enough (46%) or even too much (15%) of precautions in the face of the epidemic. The trust thus placed in the authorities could obviously evolve rapidly, if the situation deteriorates in our country.
* Survey carried out on a sample of 1,005 French people representative of the population aged 18 and over, interviewed by internet on January 29 and 30, 2020.

Mortality, contagiousness … Le Figaro takes stock of the new “Chinese” virus.
While the toll of the epidemic currently raging in China is getting worse by the day, the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) will almost certainly make you forget the other viruses, usually in the spotlight. That of seasonal influenza, which has already killed 22 people in France this year, or that of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), at the origin of an epidemic at the end of 2002. Without forgetting, the Ebola virus, which, since 1976, has claimed nearly 15,000 lives in Africa, according to the World Health Organization.
Is this new coronavirus worse? Does he deserve all the attention the world pays him?
To compare the dangerousness of several viruses, we must look at their ability to kill (fatality rate), to cause serious cases (complication rate) and their ability to move from one person to another (rate of transmission). Regarding the newcomer, all this is not yet very clear. “We have very little data on this new coronavirus, and the data we have has a very high level of uncertainty,” explains Dr. Sibylle Bernard-Stoecklin, epidemiologist in the direction of infectious diseases at the Agence Santé Publique France. We don’t know, for example, how transmissible or virulent this virus is. ”
To date, 7,783 cases of people affected by 2019-nCoV have been confirmed. The vast majority (98.6%) is concentrated in China. Of these, 170 have died and at least 133 have been cured. “We know that many of the patients are affected by a minor form of the infection, but that 20% of the cases are severe and 2% have died,” said Dr. Michael J. Ryan, executive director of the emergency program at the World Health Organization (WHO), during a press conference held on January 29, stating that these data are likely to change in the coming days. By comparison, 50% of SARS cases were severe forms.
A mortality rate of 2% is much less than that of the SARS virus. In 2002-2003, this coronavirus, a very close cousin of 2019-nCoV, had infected 8,098 people in around 30 countries and left 774 dead. Its fatality rate has been estimated at 43% in people over 60 and 13% in those under 60. This is less than the average fatality rate of the Ebola virus, estimated at 25% but up to 90%. As for the flu, its lethality is much lower than that of other viruses, around 0.3%. In France, this represents around 10,000 deaths each year.
At this stage, however, the mortality rate for the new “Chinese” coronavirus may still change. “Some people can be infected without having symptoms, which means that we do not know the real number of people affected,” says Dr. Bernard-Stoecklin. Thus, if the total number of cases is greater than that currently displayed and if the number of deaths does not increase drastically in the coming weeks, mortality will automatically decrease.
Between January 23 and 30, the number of cases in 2019-nCoV increased by 7 times. Does this make it a highly contagious virus? According to a study published January 29 in the New England Journal of Medicine , the contagiousness of the virus (called “basic reproduction rate”) would be approximately 2.2. This means that on average, each patient in turn infected 2.2 people. Other teams have carried out this work and obtained rates ranging from 1.4 to 5.5. By comparison, SARS has a reproduction rate of 3, influenza from 1.2 to 1.4 and, for Ebola, this rate is between 1 and 2.
This is very little, given the rate of measles (between 12 and 18) or that of rotaviruses, responsible for epidemics of gastroenteritis (about 18). Like the mortality rate, the basic reproduction rate of 2019-nCoV is still likely to change, especially since it depends as much on the biological characteristics of the virus as on human factors (population density, hygiene measures, etc.). ). It is only at the end of the epidemic, once all the data are available, that it cannot be definitively established.

After having long undergone his law, the Austrian Dominic Thiem signed his first Grand Slam victory over Rafael Nadal, defeated in four sets in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wednesday January 29 in Melbourne (7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6).
Friday, for his first semi-final in Melbourne, he will face the German Alexander Zverev, qualified earlier in his career in the last four of a Grand Slam by beating the Swiss Stan Wawrinka (15 th ) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Thursday’s other poster is a classic that will see Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer compete.
“I was lucky in the critical moments, the net was on my side. But Rafa is one of the best in the world and you always have to be lucky to beat him,” said Thiem.
Thiem and Nadal had already faced each other thirteen times, and if the Austrian had won four of these duels, Nadal had won all those (5) who had disputed in the framework of a Grand Slam, including the last two finals of Roland-Garros. But for this sixth game in a major, the Austrian proved to be too strong for the Spaniard.
The two men started the match by putting all their power together, then they accentuated their blows and finished by striking even harder … Thiem did not let go for an inch in physical combat. At most, they are shown to be feverish when it comes to serving for the match at 5-4 in the 4 th set. “It was a bit special to serve against Nadal to qualify for my first semi-final in Melbourne … I did not hold the pressure,” he conceded.
In the first two sets, Nadal took the serve of the Austrian, who each time managed to come back and win the tie-break. Nadal showed signs of nervousness. “It’s amazing that after a point like that, you can start the countdown so quickly. You don’t like good tennis, ” he said to the referee, who had just sanctioned him for exceeding time in service.
His explosion of joy by winning the 3 th round was significant at the time of his will and his relief. In the 4 th set, it was Thiem who broke this time and was unable to conclude on his serve at 5-4, leaving Nadal to equalize at 5-5 by committing direct faults. But he concluded the 3 th match point in the decisive play.
“No one can imagine what it means to me. I worked very hard to improve my service and the work pays today, at the best time, because it is in Grand Slam that you have to play your best tennis,” said Alexander Zverev after his victory against Wawrinka.
“I was ready to explain to journalists why I had lost in three sets,” admitted the German in reference to the express loss of the first run. “It took me a set to get used to his ball,” he said.
Zverev, who has already won three Masters 1000 titles (Rome 2017, Canada 2017 and Madrid 2018) and won the End of Season Masters in London in 2018, has never exceeded quarterbacks in the Majors. He believes, however, that finally reaching, at 22, the half of a Grand Slam, is not yet “the best day of [his] life” .
“I’m sorry but I like titles! “ , Said the player who has reached the 3 th place worldwide ranking in 2017, becoming the youngest player to reach the podium since Novak Djokovic in 2007.
After his first round, he had announced that he would pay 10,000 dollars per victory and even the entire bonus (up to 4.12 million Australian dollars, or 2.5 million euros, for the winner) in support for victims of fires ravaging Australia.
“It was easy to say after the first round, huh? But it still is! With this 4 million Australian dollars, I could buy cars but there are people who need this money to rebuild their house. My parents always taught me that you have to help people in need, ” he said.

Time was beginning to be long for Garbine Muguruza. The Spanish player had not reached the final of a Major tennis tournament since the 2017 edition of Wimbledon, which she had won. Saturday February 1st, she will be on the court in Melbourne with the objective of winning the title at the Australian Open. She will face the American Sofia Kenin.
Garbine Muguruza offered his ticket to this final by dominating, Thursday, January 30, the Romanian Simona Halep. Today ranked 32nd in the world, the Spanish won in two sets against the world number 3, 7-6 (10/8), 7-5.
” I feel good. I have just beaten several Top 10 players in a row, it is an undeniable sign that my level is good. I structure my points better, I use my weapons better. And confidence has returned, “ said Muguruza, who, in addition to Wimbledon, also won another Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros in 2016.
The routes of the two Australian Open finalists only crossed once, in September 2019 in Beijing. Sofia Kenin won in three sets. “It was frankly not a good match on my part! But at least now I know what to expect from Sofia. It will be difficult ”, anticipates Garbine Muguruza.

The coronavirus is also having a strong economic impact in China. Therefore, many companies are deciding to stop working or close many of their stores temporarily just on the day that the Chinese government has issued in a statement that “the virus is expanding . ” The latest figures speak of 132 people killed due to the coronavirus.
Air transport companies such as British Airways have decided to stop flying to China while others have returned the amount of the ticket in full in cases where their customers have decided to cancel their trip.
On the other hand, the Swedish furniture company, Ikea, has decided to temporarily close half of the 30 stores they have in China. The company has announced that it will continue to pay the salary to its employees. It is estimated that Ikea in China employs around 14,000 people. Meanwhile, another big company like Starbucks has decided to close up to 2,000 new coffee shops.
In turn, Toyota has made official that it will suspend operations at its plants until February 9. Meanwhile Volkswagen and Credit Suisse banks Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have asked their workers to telework.
Finally, it has also been known today that the H&M clothing company has closed 45 stores and suspended business trips from both the Chinese country and from outside, as well as that they have advised all their workers to remain, for the moment, 14 days in their houses.
For most companies, it is still too early to quantify how many losses this break will mean to which the country is being subjected.

An Open Arms humanitarian ship saved 45 more migrants in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, bringing 282 people on board and waiting at sea for a European country to authorize a port.
The founder and director of the NGO Open Arms, Carcar Camps, has indicated on social networks that the ship has received an alert call from Alarm Phone, a telephone service made available to migrants. The 45 people who were trying to reach the European coasts across the central Mediterranean were “in poor physical condition.”
“We now have 282 people on board and medical cases that may require evacuation,” said Camps. Open Arms has rescued almost 300 people on several rescue devices deployed at sea since Monday.
Among the migrants are at least three women and 38 unaccompanied minors who come from countries such as South Sudan, Gambia, Egypt, Senegal, Chad, Burkina Faso, Guinea and the Central African Republic, explained Open Arms mission chief Gerard Canals.
The Italian Ministry of Interior also reported Tuesday that so far this year 870 migrants have arrived in Italy, compared to 155 that did so during the same period last year and 3,176 in 2018. Open Arms is currently the only humanitarian ship in the central Mediterranean area.
